In this article I’ll give you some basics to create a proper Designer Resume that will increase your chances of getting an interview for your dream job.
SETTING THE FOUNDATION
Instead of giving you the actual step-by-step lesson of a how to create great Resume and it’s building process, that is already covered billions of times online, in numerous books and in publications, I’ll try to improve your mindset about this career attribute, so you’ll be able to create one that will be working the best for you in terms of your career goals.
WHAT IS IT FOR ANYWAY?
While creating your resume you have to understand and keep in mind what this document means and why is it for actually.
Many people think that resume is something that determines whether they gonna get the job or not. Or they think that a resume helps somebody to understand you better as a person or a pro. Or anything else, but not the actual purpose of it.
Remember one simple truth, Resume – is a document that helps you to get an interview with your potential employer. That’s it, nothing more nothing less.
Job market is a market, employer is a buyer and you are nothing, but goods. Eventually your resume is an “advertising brochure”of you as a goods.
If that “brochure” is attractive, people will gonna try you, to understand whether you’re really that good as advertised. I hope you’ve got the point!
CREATIVE vs AVERAGE
Many of you might think that if you’re a Designer, the resume has to be creative, cause you’re a Designer, right?
That is wrong! Of course, you might have a copy of a resume that is incredibly creative in terms of the way it looks and the way you’re presented there as a brand, and that is awesome idea. I think it could be a good additional attribute to your interview. But that shouldn’t be the first and the main resume you’ve got out there and you’ll going to send to people initially.
Resume is a very standardized document, that sometimes is reviewed by a specific recruiting software, that works not the best way in most cases. So you have to match that system’s criteria, to fit into the filter.
And even if it will be reviewed by a person, it doesn’t mean that he/she will welcome your creative way of presentation. People got feelings, right? Also they might have a different design taste or even might not have one at all. So you don’t have to produce any extra negativity in their head.
Making it standard allows others to read, find and understand your skills, experience, education and expectations easily, without wasting people’s time!
WHO’S WATCHING?
While creating a resume remember the conditions it’ll be reviewed.
First of all it might be reviewed by a computer software on the first stage. Then, in most cases, it gonna be reviewed by a recruiter. And then, hopefully, it gonna be reviewed by your potential manager. Also, if you didn’t know it, some companies receive hundreds and sometimes even thousands of resumes a day. So you gotta do something to fit the filter.
That is why making it standard, the way people used to see this document is mandatory.
Imagine a recruiter sitting on his desk, facing stacks of resume in front of him, that are relevant to multiple positions, having no idea of what is actually important for each position and having a set of requirements for candidates from department managers, and holding yellow marker in his hand. At that moment he wishes to find and highlight skills needed effortlessly.
So if he wouldn’t be able to find the right skills easily within 30 seconds, he’ll pass you without any hesitation and the best place your resume appear after that is a trash can. That is why it is your job to make him able to find exactly what he’s looking for!
WHAT MAKES IT EFFECTIVE?
Effective resume is the one where the best information is presented using strict system.
Objective has to be relevant not only to your skills and experience, but to a position you’re applying to. If you know that you fit multiple positions and you’re willing to apply to all of them – create a separate resume for each of those positions that has different objective relevant exactly to that position you’re currently applying to!
So if you’re sending your resume to a Graphic Designer position, put a “GRAPHIC DESIGNER” to your resume as a heading. If you’re applying to an Art Director position, put “ART DIRECTOR” to your resume as a heading. And so on.
Don’t put any photos or images to you’re resume. As I’ve already said, you’re reducing extra negativity to your personality by doing that.
Present your skills and experience using short and informative bullets. This multiplies the convenience of studying your resume by many times.
Show your accomplishments, not just your experience and education. This helps you to build your extra value.
Add years of experience to any skill you’re presenting there. This clarifies your actual experience.
And one more thing, use key words relevant to your qualification throughout all your resume. This helps to stand out among others, when recruiters are using software to filter the best candidates to a specific role.
Just remember, don’t add any garbage, just the important facts about you, flavored with a bit of a “style sauce”.
NETWORKING
It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know.
In todays market is simply dumb not to have a LinkedIn account.
First of all this is another place where your resume is showcased, because your profile is a direct reflection of your resume.
Second, it’s a great place to build valuable professional connections that will help you to grow by learning from successful industry professionals.
And third, by contributing to this amazing social network you’re able to be discovered by talent seekers. For example I get at least 2 job proposals each week, and this number is constantly growing.
So create, develop, improve, promote and keep up to date your LinkedIn account!
IT’S NOT a CIA INTERROGATION
As I’ve already mentioned, it’s your advertising brochure, but not your testimony to a police officer.
So add only the information that is relevant to a position you’re applying to and may help you get an interview, while keeping things that may harm you away from your resume.
Use your talent to present information in an attractive way to build a desire of a hiring manager to invite you for an interview, because that’s what it’s all about!
